These are some of the funniest holiday stories I have ever read. What a great introduction to my new kindle! I found myself reading them at coffee shops -- and at the gym. Indeed, I lost track of time when reading them on the elliptical trainer and ended up working out longer than anticipated.Bernstein has a good gift for language and offers many clever witticisms in these amusing tales. One story, "The Holiday Tree," is both touching and very visual. I imagine that it would make a great comedy sketch or short film. Many of the tales put a smile on my face and others caused me to pause and ponder.
If you're looking for some amusing short stories, you'll enjoy this collection. And if you take your kindle to the gym, you may find yourself shedding a few pounds.

This is a wonderful collection of short stories that are as varied as they are funny and compelling. I’m a great fan of Mr. Bernstein’s writing, and one of his strongest qualities is how he builds a story and allows it to swell and carry you on the ride so fully every time. In this collection, each story has a rhythm all its own. From an unpredictable Jewish Elvis in “Blue Christmas” to the heartbreaking (and my favorite) “Brownie Mix”, Mr. Bernstein allows each story to find its own unique breath and time, while bringing you intimately into the minds and souls of the characters. And that’s one of his other great gifts no matter how ridiculous or idealistic or miserable a character might be – they’ve all been graced with big hearts by the author.
These stories are guaranteed to soothe your every misery, either through humor or by providing companionable suffering. My personal favs are Blue Christmas and the quirky and surprising Smoking Lounge. Download and enjoy!

I, too, have been following Alex Bernstein on the internet for a long time. He is brilliant. I love his mind. If only I could understand it. I have no idea how and where he comes up with some of his scenarios. All I know is that I thoroughly enjoy each and everything he writes. And I am definitely going to gift this book to many of my friends.
Alex is a writer of uncommon talent, especially of the "miserable" kind. This collection of short stories demonstrates a finely honed wit and eye for detail, yet is economical in its words, allowing the reader to focus on the most important facet of the story while keeping the narrative moving. Be prepared for a "miserable" time! Great!
I'm not a short story reader, but I really enjoyed this collection. Alex Bernstein presents an interesting range here with stories that are at times depressing (The 22), heartbreaking (The Smoking Lounge), and dark (Her Day Off), yet relatable (Brownie Mix) at times with glimmers of hope that make you root for certain characters like one in The Smoking Lounge or Julian. With a dose of his own brand of humor and irony thrown in, you want to keep reading. And I particularly enjoyed The K-Rope which is a genre in and of itself.
I was expecting something along the lines of David Sedaris here. Nope, no way. A lot of the stories had nothing to do with holidays and most focused on people being miserable and weren't very funny. I only paid $1.99 for the book but feel that I was overcharged.
